Lias is a clayey limestone from the early Jurassic period found mainly in the south west of England, often coloured by the fossils and ores contained within.
Lias gets its name from quarrymen’s dialect for layers – referring to the natural state of the rock when quarried.
Blue Lias is coloured by the iron content of the rock, with layers of limestones and shale. This variety of Lias is usually found in the Somerset and Dorset Areas, typically the Lyme Regis, Glastonbury and the Polden Hills.
A Fine-grained form of limestone, dating to the late Triassic Period, White Lias Stone occurs mainly in Somerset.
Examples of Lias in modern day use can be seen around the country in many flooring and building applications, and commonly found in churches, cathedrals and manor houses across the country.
